Representation of Christians on television – a theological response

My article yesterday about J John’s open letter to the BBC about the lack of representation of Christians seems to have a struck a chord with many people.

I was thinking about it again this morning. Why do we want to see more Christians on TV? Do I really want to see them? Often when there is a Christian on television it brings out my worst critic.

This prompted some reflection on Jesus’ approach. Again and again through the Gospels the Kingdom of God is described as something initially hidden:

The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field… (Matthew 13:31)

The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.” (Matthew 13:33

the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44)

So why are we so desperate for representation when the model given to us by Jesus is the hidden out working of God’s grace in our communities?

Something worth pondering I think.
